John has extensive experience in community pharmacy, academia and the NHS and is a qualified supplementary prescriber. He has been involved in the delivery of a range of novel pharmacy services including the running supplementary prescribing clinics for patients with hypertension.

John has a keen interest in further developing the unscheduled care role of community pharmacists within the current redesign of urgent care programme, and in increasing the remote prescribing role for pharmacists, nurses and dentists within NHS 24.

He has research and teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in pharmaceutical care and pharmacy practice. His research interests include the development of novel methods to provide quality assurance of drug therapy use, pharmaceutical care models, evidence-based guidelines and cardiovascular disease.

In John's current role, he is responsible for providing NHS 24 and the Scottish Ambulance Service with professional and strategic leadership and advice to ensure the highest standards of evidence-based practice are achieved, and the pharmacy profession continues to operate at the forefront of change.
