Introduction
Cholesterol is a risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and stroke. In the UK, two out of three adults have a total cholesterol (TC) level of 5mmol/L or above. On average, men in England have a cholesterol level of 5.5mmol/L and women have a level of 5.6mmol/L. The UK population has one of the highest average cholesterol concentrations in the world.
The Department of Health launched the vascular risk programme (NHS Health Checks) in April 2009, presenting an opportunity for pharmacists in England to help reduce the risk of cardiovascular risk in those aged 40 to 74 years. The programme assesses people’s risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and diabetes. Cholesterol testing is one aspect of the assessment.
This quick reference guide will be of use to community pharmacists who are setting up screening services. It provides information about cholesterol, desired cholesterol levels and how to identify those at risk of high cholesterol, giving pharmacists tips on how to operate an efficient testing service and discusses how pharmacists can help patients.
