Pharmacists as the  “experts on medication” have a professional duty to ensure that medicines provided to patients are clinically appropriate both in terms of efficacy and safety. In order for a pharmacist to achieve this he/she would need to seek  and evaluate information from different relevant sources to enable him/her to make a decision on the appropriateness of  the patient’s treatment. This information would need to cover not only specifics relating to the medication regimen but should include any patient characteristics, administration and monitoring requirements that may impact on the choice of treatment.
