Welcome to the mentoring support service from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. This service enables pharmacists practising at every level in all sectors of pharmacy to benefit from the support and guidance of their more experienced colleagues through a variety of approaches to mentoring.
You may sometimes need someone with experience in your profession to help you make decisions relating to your career path and this could help you achieve and even exceed your own goals. A mentor could be part of this process giving you clarity and guidance and empowering you to progress. Our mentoring service is provided for the profession, by the profession, in order to maximise your true potential in achieving all you wish to accomplish, in offering high quality, safe and effective services to your patients and the public.
We offer an online mentor – mentee matching database which allows you to access a mentor to suit your needs or to volunteer your services as a mentor. We also help you to link up with other members of your profession for both offering and receiving mentoring support through local practice forums, RPS support, online groups and our website.
Finding a mentor
There are a number of different ways you can find a mentor to suit your needs and circumstances. This will vary according to the type of mentoring you require. You may be looking for formal mentoring through a programme, help with career direction or you might want informal mentoring with a friend or colleague to support you as a peer.
Becoming a mentor
There are many opportunities for mentoring through the Society; e.g. If you are a pre-registration pharmacist, or a pharmacist in post or a retired pharmacist, we need your expertise which will be of value to others in your profession. You do not need any specific training to register on the RPS mentoring database or to make yourself available to support your colleagues’ career development. As a mentor, you are contributing to your own development and to that of colleagues in your profession. Whether you are a pre-registration pharmacist, practising or retired pharmacist, mentoring gives you the chance to share the benefits of your experience with others and to empower them to take responsibility for their performance.
How mentoring helps
Mentoring has benefits for both mentors and mentees.
As a mentee, you maygain an increased understanding of work issues and how different approaches may help you to deal with them. You can use mentoring as a “sounding board” for your ideas or benefit from the knowledge and experience of someone else in a similar external environment and learn about the characteristics and culture of the sector. You need to know your strengths and areas of development and mentoring can be particularly beneficial here if you are thinking of changing your sector of practice or returning to practice following a career break. Mentoring therefore has the potential to help increase your self-awareness, focus on priorities, improve in certain areas and increase your confidence at work.
For both mentors and mentees, there are opportunities for self-learning through a positive attitude and passion for high quality service delivery which contributes to your own CPD.
Our mentoring FAQ’s are a useful resource for both mentors and mentees.
