The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) has launched a new Leadership Development Framework.
The Framework provides a consistent guide for all pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists across Great Britain to develop their leadership behaviours
, regardless of experience or pharmacy sector. Based on extensive work and wider research from the NHS Leadership Academy
, the Framework summarises effective leadership behaviours into nine domains: Inspiring shared purpose; Leading with care; Evaluating information; Connecting our servic; Sharing the vision; Engaging the team; Holding to account; Developing capability; and Influencing results.
Catherine Duggan, RPS Director of Professional Development and Support said: “In 2011 the RPS published its Leadership Competency Framework which focuses very much on the ‘what to do’ when it comes to leading. This new Framework focuses on the ‘how to do’, outlining the behaviours of effective, engaging leadership. It also better reflects current thinking in leadership, particularly post-Francis.
“Leadership is a key element of a pharmacist’s professional development and practice. It is the responsibility of everyone within the team, not just the individual that is accountable for how a team performs. This new Leadership Development Framework will therefore be beneficial to all pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, wherever they are in their professional development and no matter what sector they are practising in. Developing leadership behaviours can improve ways of working and furthermore enhance patient care.”

Further leadership support materials
are in development and will be made available to members in 2015.
The NHS Leadership Academy’s Healthcare Leadership Model’s online self-assessment tool
and 360 degree support tool can be used in conjunction with the RPS Leadership Development Framework.
