Following a management career and Board directorship in the NHS, Hamish joined the Scottish Executive Health Department in 1999 as Head of the Primary Care Division, a post from which he retired in 2006. He was appointed CBE later that year. He was a Board member of the Care Commission from 2006 to 2011 and is currently a non-executive Board member of the Trustees of the General Medical Council Pension Scheme, Healthcare Improvement Scotland, the Scottish Dental Practice Board, the Board of Governors of Robert Gordon University, and the Scottish Advisory Board of Marie Curie. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners. His other interests include Hellenic studies, theatre, music and family history.
