MHRA Drug Safety Update: Life-threatening and fatal opioid toxicity from accidental exposure to transdermal fentanyl patches, particularly in children

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a drug safety update regarding transdermal fentanyl patches: life-threatening and fatal opioid toxicity from accidental exposure, particularly in children.

Pharmacists are advised to provide clear information to patients and caregivers about how to minimise the risk of accidental exposure and the importance of appropriate disposal of patches. The MHRA has produced a patient and caregiver information sheet to help you discuss this with patients.

Further details of the update and advice for healthcare professionals are available on the MHRA website.
