RPS Scotland publishes hospital pharmacy vision for consultation

RPS Scotland has published its vision for the future of hospital pharmacy. It is now seeking views on the vision, which has been created with hospital pharmacists and pharmacy teams across Scotland.

The Pharmacy 2030 vision describes a future where hospital pharmacists will be recognised as medicines experts who take leadership of prescribing in hospitals. This will include a fundamental shift away from pharmacists checking other professionals’ work into a clinical, prescribing role. However it also recognises the equal importance of pharmacists working in non-patient facing roles who, together with patient-facing pharmacists and the wider pharmacy team, will be essential in ensuring safe, effective and high quality prescribing and medicines governance in hospitals.

Andrew Carruthers, Chair of the Scottish Pharmacy Board, said: “The Covid pandemic has changed our world and it’s changed health care. This is why pharmacy needs a new vision. As the only pharmacy organisation with members across all sectors of pharmacy, RPS is well-placed to engage with the profession and ultimately create a single vision for the whole of pharmacy.

“It’s vital that our vision reflects the views of everyone involved, so I would encourage anyone with an interest in the future of pharmacy to get involved and share their thoughts.”

The vision is the third in the Pharmacy 2030 series, with visions for community pharmacy and general practice pharmacy published earlier this year. The next step is to consult on these visions, before bringing them together into a single vision for the whole profession in the autumn. In addition, further scoping is currently taking place with specialist pharmacy services, and those working in education and industry.

Clare Morrison, RPS Director for Scotland, said: “It is essential that Pharmacy 2030 is a vision developed with pharmacy teams across Scotland so we can be sure we are representing their views. It has been very encouraging to have so many pharmacists and pharmacy technicians involved in creating the vision so far, but now we want to reach people who haven’t been involved to find out what they think of it.”
