Update on Omicron Variant (England)

The UK Health Security Agency’s Chief Medical Adviser, National Medical Director of NHS England, and Chief Nursing Officer for England have issued an update on COVID-19 Omicron Variant (B.1.1.529).

The update includes:

  • A summary of discussions in relations to the Omicron variant, including information on mutations, cases, and the estimated R value in South Africa
  • Public advice for those returning from overseas travel
  • Advice for healthcare workers who have returned from overseas travel and advice for dealing with patients with recent overseas travels 
  • Information for laboratories performing SARS-CoV-2 testing

The Prime Minister's Office, has confirmed new temporary and precautionary measures following the emergence of the Omicron variant in the UK. This includes:

  • All international arrivals must take a Day 2 PCR test and self-isolate until they receive a negative result.
  • All contacts of suspected Omicron cases must self-isolate, regardless of their vaccination status. They will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace.
  • Face coverings will be made compulsory in shops and on public transport from Tuesday 30 November. All hospitality settings will be exempt.
