Supporting World Antibiotic Awareness Week

World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW) starts today. The campaign aims to increase awareness of antibiotic resistance as a global problem, and to promote best practices among the public, health workers and policy-makers to reduce its spread.

As part of our support for the week we are proud to announce we will be providing training on antimicrobial stewardship to primary and secondary care pharmacists in England in 2020. The training is funded by Health Education England and will include:

  • Face to face training on applying quality improvement and behaviour change techniques
  • Quality improvement projects in the workplace, supported by online group feedback sessions facilitated by UKCPA Pharmacy Infection Network tutors
  • Structured self-assessment and self-directed learning
  • An end of training assessment with national experts

We’ve already piloted the training – here’s how Katie, a CCG Medicines Management lead for Antimicrobial Prescribing, put it into practice.  And here’s what other trainees are saying about the programme

How else do we support Antimicrobial Stewardship?

Our Antimicrobial Expert Advisory Group works throughout the year advising on resistance, infection prevention and management, and any other issues that might affect the profession and the public.

The group is also part of the Public Health England Antibiotic Guardian Schools' Ambassadors Pilot, which encourages pharmacists to go into schools to provide education to pupils on antibiotic resistance using the e-bug programme.

You can also sign up to become an antibiotic guardian and make your pledge to make better use of antibiotics.
