Press Release

Become an Antibiotic Guardian

Changing the way we use antibiotics and developing new ones is a huge priority for public health.

As part of this we are backing the very first World Antibiotic Awareness Week which runs from 16-22 November. This will run alongside and compliment other campaigns such as Antibiotic Guardian and European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD) which falls on 18th November. These campaigns aim to raise awareness amongst the public and healthcare professionals that antibiotics are a precious resource that need to be protected for the future.
All pharmacists have a role in antibiotic stewardship and community pharmacists in particular are well placed to help provide advice on over the counter medicines to treat symptoms and help with self-care.
You and your team can take part by choosing a pledge and signing up online to become an Antibiotic Guardian. This campaign started last year and to date pharmacists are the largest single group of health professionals who have pledged to protect antibiotics.
Patients and the public are also welcome to pledge and take personal action to help protect antibiotics. PHE are hoping to have 100,000 pledges by 31 March 2016 so please sign up now and become an antibiotic guardian.
You can download free resources including toolkits, posters, leaflets and quizzes for your own activities to support the campaign.
PHE are also running free events for health professionals about antibiotic resistance and RPS Chief Scientist Jayne Lawrence will be speaking at the event in Birmingham on 18th November.
