Maloff Protect Reclassification from POM to P

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has recently agreed to reclassify Maloff Protect from a Prescription Only Medicine (POM) to a Pharmacy (P) medicine in the UK for the prevention of malaria in adults weighing more than 40kg travelling to areas where malaria is widespread.

The RPS has produced professional guidance to support pharmacists who may be involved in the supply of Maloff Protect and other P anti-malarials – Supply of Anti-Malarials as Pharmacy Medicines. The guidance highlights the importance of the patient receiving a full travel consultation and that advice on anti-malarials is only one aspect of aspect of protecting a patient’s health before travel.
