MSP Candidate Jenny Marra hears about crucial role of community pharmacists

Jenny Marra, former Labour MSP for North East Scotland and Labour 2016 MSP Candidate for Dundee City West, visited Houston pharmacy in the Lochee area of Dundee to get a close look at how community pharmacy is serving the local population. At the visit she gained an increased understanding of how even more could be achieved by further resourcing the services available and making more use of the expertise available from the pharmacy profession.
Pharmacists Colin and his wife Lesley who own the pharmacy are very involved in supporting local residents in sheltered housing to manage their medication, allowing them to stay in their own homes for as long as possible, even with complex care needs.  They have built excellent links with social care to provide holistic person centred care which showcases how health and social care integration can reap benefits for the service users.  Colin also explained the local service to test for blood borne viruses is improving patient outcomes and reducing the need for hospital appointments.
Jenny Marra also signed the Society’s manifesto pledge that everyone should have access to the expertise of a pharmacist.
