The Royal Pharmaceutical Society in Wales (RPS Wales) welcomes the publication of the Evaluation of the ‘Choose Pharmacy’ Common Ailment service that has been running as a Pathfinder scheme in Cynon Valley and Gwynedd since October 2013 ahead of a potential national roll-out.
The “Choose pharmacy" scheme aims to divert patients away from visiting GP surgeries and accident and emergency departments to using their community pharmacy as the first port of call for minor conditions.
Mair Davies, Executive Chair of RPS Wales welcomed the report’s findings and re-iterated the RPS’s support for the roll out the common ailments service to community pharmacies throughout Wales.
“I am delighted to see that the Choose Pharmacy pilot sites have demonstrated the value of community pharmacy, not only in improving patient access to a pharmacist to treat minor illness but in supporting the capacity of our GP colleagues. Choose Pharmacy shines a light on the important role of community pharmacists. It paves the way for access to individual health records by pharmacists involved in patient care and provides a platform for the growth of pharmacy roles in the community as primary care cluster arrangements evolve in Wales”.
