Reminder: restrictions on the sale of products containing pseudoephedrine or ephedrine

Pharmacists are reminded that pseudoephedrine and ephedrine can be used in the illicit production of methylamphetamine (crystal meth). Due to this risk, pharmacists and their staff should continue to be alert to requests for large quantities and abnormally frequent requests for products containing pseudoephedrine or ephedrine.

The Society has previously issued guidance highlighting how community pharmacy staff should deal with requests for potentially suspicious purchases of these products.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) recently issued a drug safety update highlighting that sales restrictions introduced in 2008 continue to be successful in managing the risk of misuse of pseudoephedrine and ephedrine. The update includes a 2017 review of the impact of restrictions.
