RPS produces professional guidance for Sildenafil 50 mg film-coated tablets, P medicine (Viagra Connect)

Sildenafil 50 mg film-coated tablets were reclassified from a prescription only medicine (POM) to a Pharmacy medicine (P) in November 2017, following a public MHRA consultation. The outcome of the consultation showed that the medication has a favourable and well known safety profile, and is hence suitable for sale as a P medicine. It is indicated for men over the age of 18 years with erectile dysfunction (ED).

The reclassified P medicine is known as Viagra Connect 50 mg, and is now available for suitable patients to purchase from pharmacies without having to consult a doctor.

We have produced professional guidance to support pharmacists and pharmacy staff dealing with requests for the medication. This includes what they will need to consider before supplying Viagra Connect as a P medicine, and provides advice on how to undertake the patient consultation. The guidance outlines the public health benefits of the medicine’s reclassification: namely, the opportunity for early identification of cardiovascular risk. The full ‘Sildenafil 50mg film-coated tablets, P medicine quick reference guide’ can be downloaded from the RPS website. This includes the anticipated FAQs, and contact details for the professional support team if members would like to discuss specific scenarios.
