RPS talks to BBC Breakfast about painkiller addiction
Being in pain can dominate your life - but opioids aren't the only answer for long term pain
Prescriptions for opioid painkillers have risen in England by almost 80% over the past decade according to the latest Prescription Analysis Data from NHS Digital. GPs in England prescribed 23.8 million opioid-based painkillers in 2017, 10 million more than in 2007.
Opioids are effective for acute pain but far less so for chronic pain.
RPS would like to see better prevention of addiction, for example, through pharmacists reviewing patients on these medicines.
In a film for BBC Breakfast, RPS President Ash Soni said “We need to find ways to reduce the use of these drugs.”
