RPS welcomes sildenafil in community pharmacies

Sildenafil is now available as a P medicine

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society fully supports the move to make sildenafil available at community pharmacies as a P medicine so it can be provided directly by pharmacists after a consultation with a patient about erectile dysfunction.

RPS President Ash Soni said:

“Having sildenafil available in pharmacies will increase access to a medicine that has been proven safe and effective through over 15 years of use by many millions of men and provides a genuine and safe supply of one of the world’s most counterfeited medicines.

“Discussing health problems with patients and advising on the benefits and risks of treatments is integral to the role of the pharmacist. Men can be assured that well over 90% of pharmacies have private consultation areas, meaning conversations cannot be overheard.

“One of the underlying causes of erectile dysfunction is cardiovascular disease, so this move will bring more men into the healthcare system where they can get proper advice and onward referral if necessary.

“We look forward to the public having access to this through all pharmacies to support everyone being able to seek the advice of a health professional at a place of their choosing.”
