The media has today reported on an analysis article in the BMJ which argues that there is not enough evidence behind the current advice that failing to complete a prescribed course of antibiotics contributes to antibiotic resistance.
The article highlights that further research is needed before the advice that patients should finish their course of antibiotics is changed, and pharmacists should continue to advise patients to complete the course. In addition pharmacists should also remind patients
- to return unused antibiotics to their pharmacy
- not to share antibiotics
- not to self-treat with antibiotics.
