Safe and secure handling of medicines: A team approach

The Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines: a team approach was published in 2005 and is essential good practice guidance that is widely used in hospital and across other settings. The guidance, which underpins medicines governance processes in organisations across all Great Britain member nations, is now significantly out of date.

We're currently reviewing and updating this guidance. A small task and finish group has been established from members of the RPS Hospital Expert Advisory Group to provide oversight for this work. We are also seeking engagement across other groups and sectors in the profession.

As this is a multidisciplinary piece of work, we're engaging with a wide range of stakeholders across Great Britain, including regulators and royal colleges, expert and specialist groups. We'll also be seeking multidisciplinary endorsement.

We are setting up a multidisciplinary advisory group to engage across professions and to ensure that the relevant expertise informs the revision of the guidance.

We anticipate that the project will take approximately 12 months to complete and we will update this page as the work progresses. Once the revision has been completed, the draft will be posted on the RPS website for open comment.
