At East Lancashire Hospitals we’ve been running the #DedicatedWardPharmacist service on up to 10 wards over the last year.
It is relatively normal for a hospital pharmacists to be responsible for 2 or 3 (or more) wards each day, and as such to concentrate on managing discharge prescriptions and new supply requests.
With Dedicated Ward Pharmacy a pharmacist works on just one ward, goes on the consultant ward round, and then stays on the ward for the remainder of the day to ensure good stuff happens – discharge planning, counselling, TDM etc., and with the right technician and ATO support, and with minimal dispensary commitment.
More details can be found in this recent Hospital Pharmacy Europe article: http://www.hospitalpharmacyeurope.com/featured-articles/dedicated-ward-pharmacists-make-impact
My Trust has agreed to roll the service out to all of our 33 wards and as a consequence we’ll be recruiting: nine Band 6 pharmacists, four Band 7 pharmacists, two Band 5 technicians, two Band 4 technicians, and two band 2 ATOs.
The band 6 advert has final come through http://jobs.elht.nhs.uk/job/v711714
If there are any pre-reg out there who have not yet secured a job then please check out the advert.
