BNF app wins prestigious BIMA award

The British National Formulary (BNF) App has won the Website & App Impact award and the overall category award for best Website & App at the British Interactive Media (BIMA) Awards.

The BNF App contains comprehensive information about all the prescription medicines available on the NHS. Its core feature is an interaction checker that helps clinicians ensure the safety of their patients by intuitively checking for possible drug interactions. Each month over 126,000 clinicians use the App to prescribe and advise on the use of medicines.

The BNF App was created by design and innovation consultancy Modern Human. Until last year, the BNF was only available to clinicians through either hard-copy reference books and static online versions. This left doctors manually checking and cross-checking information – a time-intensive process.

Karen Baxter, BNF Director at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society said: “I’m delighted the BNF App has been recognised by these awards as a very innovative product that is having a real impact on the NHS, clinicians and patients.”

Modern Human have estimated that since launch, the app has been used to prescribe drugs safely to over 10 million patients, saving each clinician roughly 15 hours a year or approximately 150,000 hours across the NHS each month.

Paul-Jervis Heath, Founder of Modern Human, said: “The awards are a great recognition of the design and usability of the BNF App. Working closely with clinicians, our aim was to provide a solution that genuinely helped them in their daily interactions with patients. Until last year, the BNF was only available to clinicians through either hard-copy reference books and static online versions. This left prescribers manually checking and cross-checking information – a time-intensive process.”
