Pre-reg salary cuts paused

After pressure from the RPS, Health Education England have halted the salary support reductions for pre-registration pharmacists, which we had labelled as ‘incoherent’.

We welcome the announcement to ‘pause’ the decision to implement a reduction in salary funding for pre-registration pharmacists, which was set to come into force next year.

In a letter to chief pharmacists and stakeholders, HEE acknowledge the need for ‘no disruption’ to pharmacy programmes set out in the NHS Long-Term Plan and reveal the support will continue at the existing levels in 2020.

We had lobbied against the original plans, as they go against plans to recruit increasing numbers of pharmacists to new roles across healthcare.

The original decision was to reduce salary support for pre-reg pharmacists, provided to most NHS employers, from 100 to 75%.

RPS Director of Education Gail Fleming said:

“I’m pleased that Health Education England has listened to the concerns raised by RPS and others across the pharmacy profession.

“Medicines safety will be a key part of delivering the NHS Long-Term Plan and, as we ask pharmacists to do more, this needs to be underpinned by a strategic approach to training the workforce.

“I look forward to working with HEE and others in the profession so that proposed changes in future can best support patient care.”
