RPS Wales welcomes clinically-focused community contract

Today, we've welcomed a new community pharmacy contractual framework for Wales that will make greater use of the clinical skills of community pharmacists.

Placing a much greater focus on the provision of clinical services alongside the traditional role in supplying medicines, the new contract will provide a consistent service offer across the country.

Central to the new model is the introduction of a new national clinical community pharmacy service (CCPS) enabling all pharmacies to provide:

  • treatment for common minor ailments
  • access to repeat medicines in an emergency
  • annual flu vaccinations
  • emergency and some regular contraception.

The agreement also includes plans to roll out a Wales-wide prescribing service for a range of extended minor illness and for routine contraception. It will also allow health boards to agree other prescribing services to meet local needs.

Commenting, RPS Wales Chair Cheryl Way said: “In our engagement with governments across GB, the RPS consistently champions the skills and knowledge of community pharmacists and the need for their clinical expertise and increasing prescribing capacity to be recognised in designing services.

Undoubtedly, this new framework takes this on board and fully recognises pharmacy’s clinical role. These developments will see patients being able to fully benefit from the skills of pharmacists and their teams.

We are also delighted that the contract embraces the ambitions set out in the vision document, Pharmacy: Delivering a Healthier Wales, which provides a consensus view from pharmacy teams across Wales as to how pharmacy services should be developed by 2030.

At RPS, we will continue to work with the Welsh Government, CPW, HEIW and the NHS as we support our members in community pharmacy to embrace the new opportunities presented by this clinically focused contract aimed at transforming the way we deliver services in Wales”.
