Sildenafil approved to switch from POM to P medicine
Sildenafil to become available behind the counter and can be provided directly by pharmacists after a consultation with a patient about erectile dysfunction
Reacting to the news that sildenafil has been approved to switch from POM to P status, President of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Professor Ash Soni said:
“The Royal Pharmaceutical Society welcomes the MHRA’s decision to switch sildenafil from prescription only to pharmacy medicine status so it is available behind the counter and can be provided directly by pharmacists after a consultation with a patient about erectile dysfunction (ED).
“Discussing health problems with patients and advising on the benefits and risks of treatment options is an integral part of the role of a pharmacist.
“The switch will increase access to a medicine that has been proven safe and effective through over 15 years of use by many millions of men, and provides a genuine and safe source of supply of one of the world’s most counterfeited medicines.
“One of the underlying causes of ED is cardiovascular disease, so this move will also bring more men into the healthcare system where they can get proper advice and referral to their GP if necessary for further treatment.”
