Tribute to Professor Joy Wingfield

It is with great sadness that the team at RPS learnt of the death of Professor Joy Wingfield, Honorary Professor of Pharmacy Law and Ethics at the University of Nottingham.

Joy qualified in 1971 and after five years became an Inspector for RPSGB, when the Society was the profession’s regulator. In 1986 she was appointed Head of Ethics and Registration at RPSGB, then in 1991 moved on to roles at Boots, where she continued to develop her expertise in law and ethics in pharmacy practice. She edited the definitive guide ‘Dale & Appelbe’s Pharmacy and Medicines Law’ and authored many other titles. She founded the Pharmacy Law & Ethics Association and had her own consultancy, working with pharmacists and pharmacy organisations. In 2000, she was seconded part-time to special chair of pharmacy law and ethics at University of Nottingham, and became Honorary Professor after her retirement.

RPS Chief Executive Paul Bennett said: “I was very sad to hear that Joy has died. I worked with Joy at Boots and the CCA and greatly valued her sound wisdom and clear advice. She had a huge influence on the profession and will be very much missed, by me and so many others.”

RPS President Sandra Gidley said: “Joy pioneered the development of pharmacy law and ethics and her extraordinary depth of knowledge made a lasting impact on the pharmacy profession. She was a long-standing contributor to the Pharmaceutical Journal, where we will post a full obituary. We also propose to dedicate the 12th edition of Dale & Appelbe to her memory. She was a fantastic role model for women and I know she encouraged many to spread their wings. Whilst it is right and proper to remember her work achievements, I shall also remember her as great fun and she will be missed by many.”
