Prescription Charges

Policy topic

The list of those exempt from medical charges hasn't changed since 1968, leaving it outdated and unfair.  The RPS would like for charges to be abolished as it is in Wales and Scotland, however the priority is addressing charges for those with long term conditions who are often prescribed multiple medications for long period of time.  The cost of this to the patient, who's income may also be suffering from their condition, is unjustifiable and can put people in a position of medicines poverty.

"The false economy of tax raising from the sick ignores the impact on people’s health, hospital admissions and ability to remain in work. Medicines are prescribed for a reason and shouldn’t be taken based on a patient’s ability to pay for them." David Branford, English Pharmacy Board Chairman (2013-2015)

The Prescription Charges Coalition

The Prescription Charges Coalition is a group of nearly 40 organisations campaigning to end unfair prescription charges for people with long-term medical conditions. It meets regularly with civil servants and politicians to achieve its aim of creating a fairer healthcare system for all those who use it.
