Quick reference guide
High cholesterol is a risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke.
In the UK, two out of three adults have a total cholesterol (TC) level of 5mmol/L or above. On average, men in England have a cholesterol level of 5.5mmol/L and women have a level of 5.6mmol/L. The UK population has one of the highest average cholesterol concentrations in the world.
Excess cholesterol can accumulate and form deposits called plaques on artery walls (hardening of the arteries). As plaques continue to grow, blood flow may slow or even stop.
Providing a cholesterol testing service in a pharmacy setting requires significant resources, and these need to be considered carefully.
