Pharmacists role in chronic conditions management highlighted

Pharmacists' crucial role in managing chronic conditions was highlighted to members of the Senedd (MSs) this week.

To coincide with the Senedd’s Health and Social Care Committee inquiry into chronic conditions management, RPS Wales hosted a drop-in session at the Senedd. The session allowed MSs to drop by to speak to pharmacists and understand the benefits of pharmacy involvement in this area of care.

Joining RPS staff were RPS Wales Board members Helen Davies and Richard Evans, together with expert RPS members:

- Sheridan Court, Clinical lead pharmacist for elderly care and Parkinson’s expert at Morriston Hospital, Swansea Bay UHB.

- Charlotte Pritchard, Advanced Primary Care Pharmacist and respiratory expert at Cwm Taf UHB.

Commenting on the session, Richard said:

“It was great to get so many productive conversations with the MSs to highlight how our skills and expertise in pharmacy can be used in chronic conditions management. We particularly emphasised the importance of our pharmacology and medicines expertise when considering the optimal medication regimen for patients with co-morbidities.”

Helen added:

“It was also great to have Sheridan and Charlotte join us. Their expertise really shone through, and their patient stories undoubtedly brought the issues to life for the politicians. We’ll now follow up with further information and pharmacy site visits for the committee members and hope that pharmacy will feature prominently in their final report."
