Chloramphenicol 0.5% w/v eye drops and 1% w/v eye ointment

Chloramphenicol is a potent broad spectrum, bacteriostatic antibiotic that can be used to treat acute bacterial conjunctivitis in adults and children aged 2 years and over. It's available over the counter (OTC) as chloramphenicol 0.5% w/v eye drops and 1% w/v ointment.

As acute bacterial conjunctivitis can be self-limiting, and may not require antibacterial therapy, pharmacists need to be satisfied that the supply will be clinically beneficial and the product will be used appropriately in line with it's marketing authorisation and responsibly.

This pharmacy guide provides a summary of acute bacterial conjunctivitis and covers what to consider before supplying Chloramphenicol 0.5% w/v Eye Drops and 1% w/v Eye Ointment OTC.
