Medicines Shortages

RPS medicines shortages investigation

We are examining the causes of the growing challenge of medicines shortages to help tackle their impact on patients and pharmacy practice.

An advisory group convened by RPS and chaired by RPS Fellow Dr Bruce Warner is guiding the investigation, bringing together experts from primary and secondary care, patients, pharmaceutical industry, suppliers, regulators, government and NHS.

Online workshops held with RPS members have ensured that the experience of pharmacists on the frontline will inform the investigation. Pharmacists told of the challenges of helping patients by trying to source patient medicines that are unavailable or difficult to obtain.

The project is gathering evidence, including desk research, engagement with stakeholders, members and patient groups, to help address the causes of medicine shortages and identify potential steps to reduce the impact on patient care.

The work of the advisory group and evidence gathering will inform the development of recommendations to be published at the end of 2024.
