Professional experience and particular interests: Hemant Patel’s main interest is pharmacy innovation and health and care policy analysis. He is working to help reposition community pharmacy as part of an integrated primary care. He was the lead author for Indispensable: A Vision for Community Pharmacy in the 21st Century and was the first recipient of the RPS’s Charter award in 2011.

His innovative projects include NHS Testbed work to test the feasibility of AF detection and direct referral to cardiology team, Health Foundation funded project to demonstrate the value of Physical Health-checks and blood-tests in Community Pharmacy, AF detection in mentally ill patients, New community pharmacy based pathway for under-5s to reduce A&E attendance. 

He developed the concept of SelfCare Pharmacy which creates a role for community pharmacists in management of LTCs.

He served four terms as President of RPSGB and has served the profession at local, national, European, Commonwealth and world level. As President, he set out an ambition to establish Britain as the safest place in the world to receive medicines and has won several awards for his work to reposition community pharmacy and has been mentioned by various pharmacy ministers in dispatches.
