Pharmacies are required to denature CDs prior to disposal. Usually, this process requires an appropriate licence but pharmacies can register an exemption without needing to obtain a licence.

In England and Wales, an exemption is issued by the Environment Agency and is known as the ‘T28 exemption’. This allows pharmacies to sort and dispose of CDs and to comply with the 2001 Regulations by denaturing them prior to disposal. This exemption needs to be registered with the Environment Agency, which can be done on their website: www.gov.uk
